The 152th Topical Symposium of the Magnetic Society of Japan

Future migration of advanced magnetic and optical storage technologies

According to the progress of high-speed network technology, large data exchange and storage can be easily operated in the world. As advanced data storage, both the higher recording density and the faster data rate are required. However, optical recording faces to the physical limit of the standard optics and the standard magnetic recording faces to the physical limit of the recording field. In order to break the limit, near field optical recording is studied beyond standard optics. On the other hand, as all new optical recording technology, many holographic recording are reported. The highest recording density of the holographic storage is 515Gb/in2, it is over that of the advanced HDD. In the case of magnetic tape storage, sure improvements of data capacity have been done toward over Tera Byte cartridge. In order to reduce the recording magnetic field, heat assisted magnetic recording and patterned media are studied toward over 1Tb/in2. In the topical symposium, the following advanced programs will be presented and the road map of Optical disk, Tape and HDD will be discussed.
